Our flock started in 2021 with a pair of Barred Rock Hens from a local feed store in Rockford, IL called Blain's Farm and Fleet. We initially chose Barred Rock because they can handle down to 12 degrees before needing a heat lamp, and second because they are known for being good layers and meat birds. We manage a closed flock and use home remedies IN PLACE OF VACCINES or hormones, and each member of the flock gets well more than the recommended 2 square feet per bird living space. We believe that healthy chickens are better layers, so they are very spoiled (Ron's a chicken hugger, it's true) and their diets are supplemented with plant cuttings from the vegetable garden, flock blocks, dried meal worms, and whatever bugs we may catch along the way!

In addition to utilizing the hens for eggs and meat, we also incubate and hatch both for sustaining our flock, and selling to other folks. We are not very good at sexing, so all chicks are sold as straight runs. If you prefer verified HENS ONLY, we would recommend buying from our Pullets.

We are also developing our Black Australorp flock as well!
