It all started with two hens. Faith and Hope were our first two Barred Rock hens, purchased back in Illinois. When we moved to South Carolina, they came right along with us — and somewhere along the way, Ron became a full-fledged chicken hugger. Today, our flock has grown considerably, but our philosophy hasn't changed: raise healthy chickens, give them plenty of room, take good care of them, and enjoy the heck out of them.

From Our Flock to Yours

Our hens provide us with fresh eggs, but that's only part of what we do here at Handley Ranch. We also incubate and hatch chicks both to help sustain and grow our own flock and to give other folks the opportunity to start or expand theirs. We're the first to admit that we're not experts at determining the sex of a day-old chick, so all of our chicks are sold as straight-run. What you get is what nature gives you — roosters and hens alike. We raise our roosters right here on the farm through maturity, and they ultimately become part of our farm's food supply. Nothing goes to waste. If you're specifically looking for hens only, we recommend our pullets. These young hens are raised beyond the early chick stage, allowing you to skip the uncertainty of straight-run chicks and get a head start on building your laying flock.

Growing Our Black Australorp Flock

We're also developing our Black Australorp flock here at Handley Ranch. We love these beautiful birds and are excited to continue building a healthy, productive flock while sharing this wonderful heritage breed with other chicken enthusiasts.

We're not trying to be a factory farm, and we're not interested in raising chickens by the thousands. We're raising them the old-fashioned way — with attention, room to roam, good care, and a little bit of personality thrown in. After all, around here, chickens aren't just livestock. They're part of the family.
