Plymouth Barred Rock Chicks

We have straight-run Plymouth Barred Rock chicks available for purchase here at Handley Ranch. We typically incubate enough eggs to offer a batch of approximately 18–20 chicks, with a new batch generally available about every three weeks. Call us for current pricing and to place an order.

Straight Run Means Hens AND Roosters

We'll be the first to admit it: Ron is TERRIBLE at sexing day-old chicks! 😂 Because we don't claim to be experts at determining the sex of a newly hatched chick, all of our chicks are sold as straight-run. That means your order may include both hens and roosters. If you're looking for hens only, we strongly recommend purchasing one of our older birds. Our pullets and laying hens have reached an age where we can confidently identify them as females, so you know exactly what you're getting. And don't write off the roosters! Our Barred Rock roos are remarkably friendly, entertaining birds, and we raise ours right here on the farm through maturity.

Why Plymouth Barred Rocks?

The Plymouth Barred Rock is one of our favorite breeds and forms the foundation of our laying flock. They're hardy, friendly birds that are good layers and also make excellent table birds — a combination we really appreciate here at Handley Ranch. They're also beautiful birds, with that unmistakable black-and-white barred feather pattern.

How We Raise Our Chicks

We take a more natural, hands-on approach to raising our flock. We do not use added hormones, and we choose not to routinely vaccinate our chicks. Instead, we focus on good nutrition, clean living conditions, attentive care, and traditional home remedies as part of our approach to keeping our flock healthy. Our goal is simple: raise healthy, happy chickens the old-fashioned way.
